FOG-related Problems Within Sewerage Networks

The FOG Programme is being managed by WRc within the Research Foresight Partnership, which was established to create a new focus for applied research.

CP290 Fats, Oils and Greases (FOG) project was launched in October 2005.

This is the website for the FOG project. Its purpose is to disseminate project outputs, to be used as a tool to input information (such as information on product trials), also to allow discussion and act as a forum to exchange best practice for FOG-related problems within sewerage networks.

Background
Fats, oil and grease (FOG) are a major cause of operational problems for sewer system operators. FOG causes blockages in small diameter pipes and encourages sediment build up in all sewers. It is indirectly responsible for many cases of sewer flooding each year, leading to property damage and pollution incidents. Even when FOG compounds don't cause sewer system problems, they can result in problems at pumping stations and treatment works inlets.

As the problem of FOG is wide ranging the solution will not solely come from one source/area.

The project is looking at all aspects of FOG and, by working closely between these various aspects, a solution should emerge that is greater than the sum of the parts.

Four work packages have been identified and are being investigated, as follows:

Work Package 3 Biological/Chemical Review tim.simms@wrcplc.co.uk
Work Package 4a Engineering Review andy.drinkwater@wrcplc.co.uk
Work Package 4b Operations Review frank.moy@wrcplc.co.uk
