CP304  Oil in Water Instrumentation for Intake Protection Drinking Water Quality
For many river water intakes one of the greatest risks to supply is contamination due to petrol or diesel fuel spills from road traffic accidents. Oil in water is difficult to treat and will create significant taste problems in the finished water. There are instruments available for oil-on-water detection but absence on the surface may not be a reliable indicator if the spill was some distance up-stream and the oil has become dispersed into the water. The capability for detection of oil-in-water is uncertain. Several instruments have become available that use UV-visible absorbance or fluorescence and which claim to be able to detect oil in water at below the ppm level. This project will carry out tests on representative instruments to determine:

  • performance of commercial instruments with a range of spiked natural waters;
  • suitability for intake protection;
  • estimates of whole life costs.
