The Disinfection Forum has been running as a collaborative project (CP404) since March 2010 with 9 participating water companies. The water industry uses a wide range of instrumentation for the on-line measurement of water and wastewater quality. For applications such as intake protection, there is a requirement to detect low probability but high impact events. For these applications the reliability, response time and confidence in the measurement are of critical importance. New advanced monitoring technologies which offer solutions to these issues are available and in use within other industries. In December 2013, the regulatory standard for lead compliance will be reduced from 25μg/l to the World Health Organization standard of 10 µg/l. WRc has published the new 7th edition of the Civil Engineering Specification for the Water Industry (CESWI 7). This is the Specification for use in civil engineering contracts let by Water Undertakers in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In order to lengthen the service life of sewer assets and minimise odour emissions, water utilities spend considerable sums of money on preventing septicity in rising mains and corrosion in gravity sewers. However, without suitable prevention measures in place, there is a serious risk of holes developing in sewer pipes or the pipe collapsing altogether. Major changes of legislation made in 2003, which are likely to be implemented later this year, should see the transfer of responsibility for existing private sewers and lateral drains to water companies. At the same time, in order to prevent the proliferation of new private sewers and laterals, further changes to the Water Industry Act made through the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, are also likely to see mandatory adoption of all new sewers and lateral drains. Water utilities and environmental regulators in the UK are investigating surface water run-off to determine the degree to which surface water sewers are contaminated by bacterial indicator species. This contamination may occur because of sewer abuse; for example, from misconnections of domestic foul waste water to the surface water sewer system instead of the foul sewer system. Carbon emission estimates were included for the first time in TR61 Version 10 - the cost estimation software for water and wastewater treatment facilities and infrastructure, released in October 2010. The Nitrates Directive (91/676/EEC) aims to reduce water pollution caused by nitrogen from agricultural sources and to prevent such pollution in the future. Many small UK sewage treatment works are now required to meet discharge consents that include limits on phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations. Technologies for phosphorus removal from wastewater are well established, but to achieve the lowest concentrations required in some discharge consents, addition of iron or aluminium salts is generally used to remove phosphorus in a robust and reliable manner. There are over 165,000 sewer blockages on public sewer every year and over 30,000 cause flooding, 3,900 of them inside buildings. With such a large problem it is surprising that the mechanisms of sewer blockage are not properly understood. The UK water industry uses a huge 7700 Gigawatt-hours of electrical energy each year, equivalent to 4 million tons of CO2. Most of this energy goes into electric motors to do essential jobs such as pumping water and aerating wastewater. WRc has recently completed a major programme of investment to upgrade facilities at its water treatment pilot plant at Swindon.
